"VERMEER IN MUNICH"

The first exhibition for the Alte Pinakothek’s 175th anniversary year put the spotlight on the painting “Woman Holding a Balance” by Johannes Vermeer, one of the few works firmly attributed to the artist. The piece was once part of a private collection belonging to the first King of Bavaria, Max I. Joseph, and is today part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The exhibition not only explored the work itself, but also the art collecting activities of the king, who, as a patron of the arts, has tended to stand in the shadow of his son, Ludwig I.
